DERTAKERS By Advertlshi In Barometer of Local industry, the Newspaper. Minneapolis SUr If a member of your farnilv died. would you print the resolutions on a billboard? If your wife entertained, would you send an account of it to the theater program man? If you were going to enlarire vour business, would you advertise it in a hotel register? If you were going to have a wed ding in your family, would you get out a handbill? You would send such items to a newspaper, wouldn't.you i Then why don't you put vour advertisements in a newspaper? Every man who uses a billboard is adding to nature faking. Every dollar spent in a theater program, in a register, in a direct ory or in a handbill, is a legitimate j dollar taken away from the news papers of your town The newspapers build up your town. Why not help build up the newspapers? There is no better advertisement in the world for a town than a good newspaper. A newspaper is the barometer of the town's industry. Show us a good newspaper, full of advertising, and we will show you a good town, full of live merchants. Billboards are an eyesore; hand bills are a nuisance; theater pro grams are worthless; hotel regis ters, from an advertising stand point, are ridiculous. Newspapers are town builders, town advertisers, fortune makers, news disseminators, sermon deliver ers, prosperity forecasters- Thev are a necessity, not a luxury. They must be maintained. Without them The projosal of the Tiiuea-Ih-patch to raise a great cash. pru for the upbuilding of the africul tural interests of this State i mat ing with a remarkably hearty od widespread response. Hs an example of how thb pro posal is regarded we have rwirftl from W. A. Land, editor and own er of the Blftckstone Courier. letter in which Mr. Ijind say' "You may feel assured of any assistance I can r to the object you have in view of raising a sum to iro as a prize for the ist mrn grown in Virginia. While the South is making rapid stride in iu manufacturing industries, grtmW. perhaps, than any other tion. it is and, according to my belief, must for years remain primarily an acncuIturHl section With this belief, I hid ronvinred that no greater service can U rendered the South, and of couno Virginia, than to encourage its agricultural development. Its corn crop is iU greatest asset in agricultural pro ducts. Tl lerefore, to improve thi should mean the greatest twnetit." By the same mail came a letter from J. F. Jackson, president nf the Southern PlanW, in which Mr. Jackson refers to the crowing in terest taken by the people of Vir ginia in the corn crop of this Slate. As Mr. Jackson -point.- out, how ever, thegreat increase in the value of the corn crop has U-en due to the increased value jut bushel rather than to the increased pro duction. More corn and letter corn mean more bacon, more bef, more but ter, more meal, more chicken?.
